Gear

Sea kayaking in Antarctica requires special attention to gear and safety.  Some of the environmental hazards to deal with include katabatic winds, difficult sea ice conditions, icebergs, heavy swell and unpredictable landings. Falling out of your kayak in this part of the world can be fatal.  The JRMAKE team have chosen Kokatat Expedition drysuits to make sure they get home in one piece to tell the story.

When the John Rymill Memorial Antarctic Kayak Expedition team is paddling along the unforgiving Antarctic coast in early 2006, they'll be completely independent and a long way from the nearest help if an emergency occurs.  With over 1,000 km of coastline to cover in around 30 days, it could be tempting to take an awful lot of gear to cater for every possible contingency.  Of course, space in sea kayaks is extremely limited even in so-called 'high volume' kayaks.

Taking all this into consideration, the JRMAK Expedition boys have come up with a preliminary gear & equipment list that you can view here.  Although it is under constant revision, the team hope that it may be of some use to others planning similar expeditions in the future.  Any questions?  Sure!  Send us an email via the contact page.
