Update                                                                            May 27, 2006
As most will know by now, Lincoln Hall has made an incredible recovery and is now at a lower and much safer altitude, and will soon be off the mountain. The mainstream media has reported extensively on this now, and other specialist websites such as this one are posting regular updates.

Hope                                                                                     May 26, 2006
The latest reports suggest that there is still some hope for Lincoln.

Lincoln                                                                             May 26, 2006

I cannot tell you what this loss means to us here in Australia. It is unthinkable, but it has happened.

Everest Controversy                                                       May 25, 2006
Recent events on Everest have drawn comment from around the world, including from Ed Hillary. The  Mark Inglis expedition mentioned below has been in the spotlight as a result.

Aoraki to Mt Everest                                                      May 17, 2006
Back in 1982, two young kiwi friends set out to do what many young kiwis climbers do, and that is climb Aoraki/Mt Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand. The mountains of New Zealand are heavily glaciated and subject to extreme temperate weather systems that come roaring in from the Tasman Sea. The duo were high on the mountain late in the day. In the face of approaching darkness, they decided to bivvy in the large 'schrund (crevasse) at Middle Peak, also known as the 'Middle Peak Hotel'. With good weather this would be a reasonable decision. However the weather turned bad - really bad - and they were stuck there for two full weeks.
When they were finally rescued, the frostbite damage was so bad that one of these young lads had both legs amputated below the knee. Many years later, he went on to attempt Mount Everest. He summitted yesterday.

Rivers under ice                                                           May 16, 2006
British scientists have discovered rivers running deep under the Antarctic sheet, apparently fed by sub-glacial lakes. The most ancient of these lakes is thought to be 15-20 million years old. Antarctica continues to amaze me. The news report on this fascinating discovery can be found here.

Banff                                                                               May 7, 2006
I was lucky enough to get along to the Banff Mountain Film festival (in Sydney, not Banff!) during the week. It was a great night. I always find it inspiring to see the world's best doing what they do best. Especially when it involves mountains or oceans, and feats of endurance and skill. Highlights? There are lots. The ski-BASE jumping is wild, and the free-ride mountain biking is truly amazing.
10-year-old climbing phenomenon Cicada Jenerik had a message of self-belief that many people three times her age could learn from. It's a great night out and the film tour continues around Australia during May and June.

We're Back!                                                                   April 28, 2006 Whew. Back on line after a whirlwind of activity around sponsor commitments and the more mundane demands of the real-world, like debt repayments, traffic and the like. It's been a lot of fun going through the images from our recent expedition to Antarctica and reviewing the film footage. There's some great stuff in amongst it. We're looking forward to the editing process of both film and photos so that we have something to show you all in public soon.
So, what else have we been up to since returning from that coldest of cold places down south? Stu has been busy depleting his supply of scotch & cigars, Gages is in good form on the far south coast, and me?
...I've been squeezing in a bit of kiteboarding here & there in preparation for another project involving cold places and tough objectives. It's also been great spending some time with family and friends at home.
